Things To See & Do In Our Area

If you’re coming from further afield and staying for a few days, there’s plenty to see and do while you’re in the area.

Firstly, a bit about Todmorden itself, and then a brief introduction to a few other places nearby.

Welcome To ‘Tod’

Todmorden Market is a good place to start if you’re having a walk around the town, with both the indoor and outdoor markets being busiest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The town centre is not too large but is spread out along three roads which meet at a mini roundabout next to the Town Hall.

You will find a few independent shops and galleries as well as a fair selection of coffee shops and bars – all good.

If you want to get out of the town centre, there are LOTS of options for walking.

For walks on the flat, you can follow the canal in the direction of Littleborough or Hebden Bridge. Or if you’re looking to head for the surrounding hills then there are many more possibilities.

Gaddings Dam (the highest ‘beach’ in England) and Stoodley Pike monument are both accessible from Todmorden, if you have the time, and like hiking steep hills. Both have pubs nearby for a well deserved drink afterwards!

A good place to start for walking ideas and routes is the Information Centre or feel free to ask us for some recommendations.

The Todmorden Folk Festival is also on the weekend of our wedding. Whilst you may be tied up for much of Saturday’s events there are performances from Friday through to Sunday, including some free outdoor ones which can be good, particularly if the weather is kind!

Just to let you know…

You will be visiting our town when it is on the cusp of some fairly major improvements. If you come back in a couple of years’ time it will hopefully look quite a bit different than it does today, particularly the centre of the town around the Market. Hopefully you’ll come back and see us again when it’s all done!

Things To See & Do Nearby

Our nearest – and fiercest – neighbour is Hebden Bridge, 5 miles down the road. It’s a small, pictueseque town with lots of character, shops and eateries – and well worth a visit. And if you ever watched Happy Valley, it’s the town where Sgt Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) lived.

Whilst driving is quickest it’s not always easy to park there so the train can be the best option from Tod – or you can walk along the canal if you’re feeling fit!

If you like Hebden Bridge then you may fancy a quick visit to Hepstonstall, just up the hill, where the BBC drama The Gallows Poll was filmed. Or, a 20-min drive over the moors from Hebden is the beautiful town of Haworth, home of the Brontes.

Halifax is the main town in our borough, 13 miles down the road.

The town centre itself is like many other towns with lots to see and do which can all be found online but the historic Piece Hall is definitely at the top of my visitor recommendations when you’re in this part of the world.

Another particular place of interest in Halifax is Shibden Hall, the home of Ann Lister – Gentleman Jack.

If you have longer you can of course go further afield to either Manchester (30 mins from Tod on the train), or Leeds (an hours train journey away).

Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to find out more about any of the above, or for other ideas.

We look forward to welcoming you in May! 🙂
